Jordan King had 14 points as East Tennessee State beat Kent State 57-51 on Wednesday night and won the Naples Invitational. David Sloan had 12 points for East Tennessee State (4-2), which earned its fourth straight victory. Ty Brewer added seven rebounds.

Prep basketball in the Volunteer State begins this week, with Tennessee High, Sullivan East and West Ridge all involved in the Hall of Champions played across the region...Emory & Henry and King men's basketball picked up wins on Sunday, while the UVa-Wise and E&H women took defeats... ETSU set three rushing records win over Western Carolina on Saturday.

Jakhyia Davis tallied 15 points and eight rebounds, but East Tennessee State dropped to 0-2 on the season with an 80-58 non-conference loss at Bowling Green. Virginia Tech defeated George Washington and Southwest Virginia Community College was also victorious on Thursday.

Several area athletes committed to play athletics at the college level on Wednesday, including the Sullivan East duo of Alexis McDuffie (Bluefield University softball) and Peyton Miller (Alice Lloyd baseball). John Battle's Jon-Alan Richardson (Bluefield State baseball) and Thomas Walker's Lakin Burke (University of the Cumberlands basketball) also signed on dotted lines.

George Wythe’s first-round VHSL Region 1C playoff football game with the Covington Cougars was canceled on Tuesday...In other local briefs, Emory & Henry dropped a pair of exhibition games to NCAA Division I competition. Southwest Virginia Community College picked up a win, while the ETSU women lost in first-year coach Simon Harris' debut with the Buccaneers.

Former Gate City High School star Mac McClung will play his first game for the South Bay Lakers tonight as the team opens the season at home against the G League Ignite...In other local briefs, Cara Taylor became the first West Ridge runner to participate in the Class AAA state cross country meet. Both King (Memphis) and Emory & Henry (Radford) women's basketball programs played NCAA Division 1 exhibition games, both of which resulted in losses.

Mac McClung will begin the 2021-22 season with the Lakers, just not the team in Los Angeles. Jovan Buha of The Athletic reported on Wednesday that the L.A. Lakers waived McClung and that the former Gate City High School star will join the South Bay Lakers, the NBA team’s affiliate in the G League.
