The George Wythe girls and boys defeated Rural Retreat on Wednesday night, while the Sullivan East boys defeated Sullivan South. The Sullivan East girls knocked off Happy Valley. J.I. Burton also won a boys game at Holston.

“The [VHSL] state [tournament] had my hands shaking [nervously], but this is a whole other feeling,” Goode said. “It’s very surreal opening doors to new horizons.”
“Ever since I was a little girl, I have dreamed of playing college ball,” Kirtner said. “However, as I got older, the dream got bigger. The path to becoming a Division I player is extremely narrow. I knew that I would definitely have to put the work in in order to accomplish that goal.”
“I have a lot of respect for Coach Beale,” Honaker coach Doug Hubbard said. “He is such a great ambassador for football and coaches. He’s always been a first-class person and deserves the recognition as a coach and a person.”

In lieu of a traditional player of the year, the sports department decided to honor 155 seniors – from Chilhowie’s Logan Adams to Hurley’s Tyler Young – who were unable to complete a final season on the high school level they had worked so hard for.
Fontaine later excelled in two sports at Radford University and is one of the few women in NCAA history to compete in the Division I basketball and volleyball national tournaments in the same school year as she did in 1993-94 for the Highlanders.
“I’m really thankful for the years I played for Lee High School and the many great memories wearing red and gold,” Myers said. “The All-Star game was definitely the cherry on top.”
“Coach Dotson had great leadership qualities,” said Randy Stidham, who played for Dotson at J.I. Burton. “He was very good at relating to his players on an individual basis. He was a true players’ coach and teacher. He had great instincts on how to motivate and inspire young players or seasoned players.”
In one respect, Mabe is one of the lucky ones, if you can call it that. Unlike the overwhelming majority of seniors who would have played baseball in this lost spring, he will have another opportunity to walk though the gate of an infield fence, put on a glove and play.

The 2020 season for Sullivan East High School’s girls basketball team came to an end on Friday night with a 59-51 loss at Grainger in the first round of the TSSAA Region 1-AA tournament.
“The constant pressure they put on you, they don’t leave a lot of room for error,” said Grayson County coach Tiny Funk. “And when they are making 3s, they are very difficult to guard.”
