Emmah McAmis continued her fine freshman season with 20 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals as Wise County Central beat Mountain 7 District rival Union, 59-36, in the finals of the Powell Valley National Bank-Tip-Off Classic girls basketball tournament at the David J. Prior Convocation Center.

The season has just begun, but John Battle High School’s steady senior point guard and promising freshman post player have already formed a cohesive combination. It showed on Wednesday as the Trojans beat George Wythe 

64-54 in a boys final in the first round of the Coach Ballard Lee Tip-Off Tournament at Virginia High’s Bearcat Den. The John Battle girls also won, defeating 58-50.

George Wythe’s first-round VHSL Region 1C playoff football game with the Covington Cougars was canceled on Tuesday...In other local briefs, Emory & Henry dropped a pair of exhibition games to NCAA Division I competition. Southwest Virginia Community College picked up a win, while the ETSU women lost in first-year coach Simon Harris' debut with the Buccaneers.
