April 30, 1947 - July 26, 2020 MARION, Va. John David Shuler, age 73, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2020, at Valley Health Care Center, in Chilhowie, Va. David was born on April 30, 1947, in Rural Retreat, Va., to the late Claude and Agnes Shuler. He grew up in Marion, Va., where he graduated from Marion High School and Steed College. David joined the Army in 1969 and proudly served his country until 1971, including a tour in Vietnam. In 1990 he married his sweetheart, Lillian Lynch. David was family oriented and helped not only with the family business but also in taking care of his mother in times of need. He believed in the Lord, and lived by the Good Book. David was always there to help his family, friends, and others to the best of his ability. May God look over and protect him for eternity. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Lillian Lynch Shuler; brother, Jimmy Shuler; and sister-in-law, Shirley Marie Shuler. David is survived by his brothers, Calvin Shuler of Salem, Va., and Billy Shuler and wife, Annette; niece, Lisa Marie Shuler, all of Marion, Va.; nephew, Brandon Lee Shuler; great-nephews, Payton Lee Shuler and Weston Andrew Shuler, all of Havlock, N.C. In keeping with David's wishes, a private family service will be held at Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion, Va. December 26, 1932 - July 26, 2020 Mrs. Josephine Matney Hess, age 87, of the River Mountain Road section of Lebanon, Virginia passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2020, at Valley Healthcare in Chilhowie, Virginia. Born on December 26, 1932, in Buchanan County, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Henderson and Jenny Runyon Matney. A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of Blackford United Methodist Church. She enjoyed embroidery, cooking, gardening and listening to gospel music. Her very favorite pastimes included going to yard sales and flea markets, and she didn't do anything or go anywhere without a Pepsi. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the love of her life for over 63 years, Ralph Clifford Hess; stepgranddaughter, Melissa Ray; son-in-law, Wayne Herndon; infant brother, Ralph Matney and sisters, Ora Vance and Lena Looney. Survivors include two daughters, Wanda Reid and husband, Tom of Chilhowie, Virginia and Connie Hess of Abingdon, Virginia; one son, Clifford Lee Hess and wife, Cynthia of Honaker, Virginia; granddaughters, Jennifer Barnes and husband, Jason of Chilhowie, Virginia and Sarah Johnson and husband, Jeremiah of Nickelsville, Virginia; stepgranddaughter, Michelle Mullins and husband, Greg of Swords Creek, Virginia; great-grandchildren, Rachael, Will, Max, Colten and Gunner; stepgreat-grandchildren, Jada, Jayson and Alexia; sister, Garnie Stacy of Grundy, Virginia and several nieces and nephews also survive. Tiller, Reggie Vernon
February 2, 1978 - July 23, 2020 Reggie Vernon Tiller, age 42, formerly of Council, Virginia, passed away last week in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he had lived for the past 15 years. Born February 2, 1978 in Abingdon, Virginia, he was the beloved son of Dennie and Rita Presley Tiller of Davenport, Virginia. He was a 1996 graduate of Council High School and a 1998 graduate of Southwest Virginia Community College. He continued his education at ETSU, and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science in 2002. In 2004, Reggie earned his Master of Science in Applied Computer Science at ETSU. On May 13, 2018, he became a USCG Master Captain which permitted him to operate a vessel which weighed no more that 50 tons and could carry up to 28 passengers. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Vernon and Kate Tiller and maternal grandparents, Earl and Bess Presley all of Council, Virginia. In addition to his parents, survivors include aunts and uncles, Ronnie Tiller and wife, Patsy, Brenda Tiller and husband, Guy, Jim Presley and wife, Linda, Harry Presley and wife, Diane, Terry Presley and wife, Donna, Sue Sisk and husband, Bill, and Judy Boyd and husband, Jack. He also leaves behind his best buddy Corri, who is lost without his friend and companion. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 2020, in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Pastors Brandon Nuckles and Jeff Kinder officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon, Virginia. January 2, 1949 - July 25, 2020 Rudy Marvin Shelley, age 71, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2020, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born on January 2, 1949 in Bristol, Va., a son of the late, Raymond and Lona Shelley. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Junior, Waverly and Bobby Shelley. Rudy was a United States Army veteran. He retired from Exide with 35 years of service. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by his son, Scottie Shelley of Columbia, S.C.; sister, Linda Peters and husband Robert of Abingdon, Va.; and special friend, Betty Brown of Bristol, Tenn. March 17, 1954 - July 26, 2020 ABINGDON, Va. Joe Cameron Hearl, 66, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2020, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born March 17, 1954, to the late Paul and Hazel Osborne Hearl in Gretna, Va. Mr. Hearl was a resident of the Greendale community most of his life. He loved being in the outdoors especially fishing. He was a long-haul truck driver who spent many hours on the road with his dog companion Taco. July 24, 2020 Blaine Allen Morris, 65, of Chattanooga, Tenn. beloved husband, father, PopPop, son, brother, uncle, friend and Airman went to rest with his Heavenly Father on Friday, July 24, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Middlesboro, Ky., he was the oldest child of Jim and Alice Morris. Blaine graduated from John S. Battle High School 1973 where he met, Carmen, the love of his life. He honorably served in the United States Air Force and after serving, he completed his education at the University of Tennessee- Knoxville with a BS and MBA. Blaine's career spanned decades in Radiology and Hospital Administration and he was an active member of First Centenary UMC. Blaine was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Olewine Morris. Blaine is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carmen Hatley Morris; children, Justin Allen (Vilara) Morris and Stephanie Morris (Brient) Hobbs. Blaine was the proud PopPop to five grandsons, Jacob, Will, Brad, Blaine and Karl Morris, and two granddaughters, Catie Woodward and Brileigh Hobbs. He is also survived by his father, James Blaine Morris; and siblings, Jeannie Shaw (Michael) Ryce, Timothy (Irene) Morris, Steven (Elizabeth) Morris; numerous nieces and nephews; his mother-in-law, Mary Ann Hatley; and several extended family. March 19, 1942 - July 26, 2020 On Sunday, July 26, 2020, Robert "Allen" Slagle gained his heavenly wings after a brief illness. He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Helen Slagle; daughter, Lori Beauchemin and husband Eric of Lincoln, Rhode Island; daughter-in-law, Cathy Slagle; as well as grandchildren, Samantha Counts, Amanda Reynolds and husband Phillip, Zachary Counts, Kelli DePaolo and husband Jim, and Reed Boettger; as well as great grandchildren, Walker Reynolds, Abby, Regan, and Millie DePaolo, and Edan Johnson; step-grandchildren, Adam and Tara Johnson; sister-in-law, Gloria Slagle; nephews, Tim, David, and Jason Slagle; and lifelong friend, Jeff Davidson. Allen is preceded in death by his son, Ricky Slagle; great granddaughter, Emersyn Arnold; two brothers, Teddy and Gerald; parents, Jim and Mabel Slagle; along with his grandparents and great grandparents. Allen was a loving husband, wonderful father, and amazing grandfather. The family will miss his many stories and the way he always made them laugh. Allen was a lifelong resident of Bristol, VA and a member of Liberty Baptist Church. Allen retired from the Bristol Virginia Sheriff's Department in 2007, but continued to work for Senior Navigator until 2019. Allen was actively involved in all aspects of the community and in countless organizations throughout Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. Allen was well known in the little league circuit, especially at Eastern Little League, where he coached, umpired, and mentored many in this community. Due to COVID-19 restrictions the family has requested that the visitation be private. However, anyone is welcome to attend the graveside service. If you are unable to attend the graveside service but would like to pay your respects, please gather at Eastern Little League at 1 p.m., on Wednesday, July 29, 2020, as the family makes their way to Mountain View Cemetery. She was born in Green Cove, Va. on September 12, 1949, a daughter of the late Jack and Pearl Daye. Jane was a member of Green Cove Baptist Church and was a registered nurse for 49 years working most of her career at the Damascus Clinic. She is survived by her sister, Nancy Pennington and her husband, Terry, of Green Cove, Va.; a special niece, Lisa Roland and her husband, Kreig, and their daughter, Olivia Pearl Roland, all of Green Cove, Va.; two uncles, Franklin Walls and his wife, Mary, of Green Cove, Va. and Cecil Walls and his wife, JoAnne, of Quarryville, Pa.; and several cousins.
